Join us for our Annual Self-Advocates Panel, moderated by Steven Isaacson, LMSW, as we explore the theme of Community Integration through the lived experiences of autistic self-advocates.

This year’s panel will focus on how autistic individuals navigate their communities — from building connections to learning who’s around us and how we fit into the spaces we live, work, and socialize in. Through storytelling and open discussion, panelists will share personal insights, challenges, and lessons learned about participating in community life.

The panel is designed to hear directly from autistic voices and deepen understanding through real-life experiences. The evening will conclude with a Q&A session, where panelists will answer questions submitted by the audience.

BIOS

Steven Isaacson, LMSW 

Steven Isaacson, LMSW is an autistic social worker licensed in the State of Maryland. Steven’s therapeutic approach is centered on reducing stigma around neurodiversity, helping clients build their wellness toolbox, and promoting disability justice in the community. As an autistic person, Steven uses the power of lived experience to normalize what it’s like to be neurodivergent.

During the Biden administration, Steven served in the NIH Office of the National Autism Coordinator (ONAC), the office that manages the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC). In this role, he helped connect people, programs, and communities across the country to evidence-based research and autism resources at the federal level. Prior to joining NIH, Steven was an Employment Training Specialist with Kennedy Krieger Institute, and a Men's Group Instructor at the Hussman Center for Adults with Autism.

Steven earned his Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland, Baltimore focusing on Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) and Organizational Leadership. Steven graduated from Towson University with a Certificate in Autism Studies.

Sorrah Edwards-Thro

Sorrah Edwards-Thro (he/they) is an autistic, multiply-disabled person studying to become a speech-language therapist at the University of Maryland. Before that, he worked as a tutor, a caregiver, and a grant writer for a school in Haiti and got his BA in Linguistics from the College of William & Mary. Based on his personal experience with masking and burnout, he is deeply concerned with supporting autistic people as they determine what forming and sustaining authentic connections can look like for them. They bring this approach to their work as a coach in UMD's Neurodiversity and Autism Transition Services (NATS) Social Interaction Group Network For All (SIGNA) program. Sorrah received the CAPCSD Frances J. Laven Service Award in recognition of his dedication to building solidarity with other disabled people, especially the most marginalized among us.

Dr. Brittany Townsend-Galloway

Dr. Brittany Townsend-Galloway (she/her) obtained her Doctorate in Human Services in 2022. She has been working with the state of Maryland since 2016, starting as a caseworker with the Child Support Administration moving up to an assistant supervisor. In 2024, she took a new position as a Functional Analyst Supervisor with the child support systems team serving as a subject matter expert and project manager. Recently, Dr. B has become an advocate for neurodiverse individuals and raising awareness on neurodiversity as well as bullying prevention. Dr. B truly enjoys the work she has done and continues to do especially knowing she has been helping to make a difference. When she is not working, Dr. B spends time with her daughter and her husband. She enjoys being at home with her three cats while building Legos or diamond painting but also enjoys being outdoors and trying new things.

 Gabrielle Zwi

Gabrielle Zwi is an autistic advocate, musician, and educator based in Rockville, Maryland. As a full-time freelancer (www.atozwi.com), they primarily work with local neurodiverse families and contract with organizations including ArtStream, Carpe Diem Arts, The Care Farming Network, Arts for Learning Maryland, The Civic Circle, and The Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. Gabrielle loves volunteering as a Human Rights Commissioner of the City of Rockville and as a member of the Montgomery County Committee Against Hate/Violence. As a singer-songwriter, Gabrielle has released an album and several singles, and enjoys performing in concerts, protests, and other events throughout the region as a soloist and with their band Friends and Amigos. They strive to make civic engagement accessible and to amplify underrepresented voices through music as well as more conventional forms of advocacy. Gabrielle graduated from Montgomery College in 2020 with an Associate of Arts, and from Columbia University in 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Rights. Gabrielle is now a post-baccalaureate student and researcher at the University of Maryland, where they plan to pursue a Master of Arts in Speech Language Pathology. Gabrielle is a Jewish Brazilian-American and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and they have Autism Spectrum Disorder along with other disabilities that have played an integral role in their creative, academic, personal, and professional journeys.

Biografías

Steven Isaacson, LMSW, es un trabajador social autista con licencia en el estado de Maryland. La Dra. Brittany Townsend-Galloway (ella) obtuvo su doctorado en Servicios Humanos en 2022. Gabrielle Zwi es una persona autista defensora, música y educadora radicada en Rockville, Maryland.
