Community Engagement Coordinator

Organization: Partnership for Extraordinary Minds (xMinds)

Location: Local – Montgomery County, MD (Remote work with required in-county engagement)

Reports To: Executive Director

Schedule: Flexible hours; includes weekday meetings and events; requires attendance at some evening and weekend events 

Compensation:  $20 - $25/hour

We are seeking a highly organized and engaging individual to strengthen our volunteer network, deepen community partnerships, and expand our outreach efforts across a diverse community.

Position Summary

The Community Engagement Coordinator is a new full-time role responsible for strengthening xMinds’ volunteer network, enhancing community relationships, and supporting organization-wide outreach and communications. This person will build and maintain meaningful connections with families, educators, professionals, and donors across Montgomery County and help ensure that our programs reach a broad and diverse community.

The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator (both writing and speaking) who enjoys engaging with people, training volunteers, and strengthening community involvement.

Bilingual skills are highly valued, especially Spanish, Amharic, and Mandarin, to strengthen outreach to families who speak languages other than English.


Key Responsibilities 

1. Volunteer Engagement, Recruitment & Retention (Primary Focus)

  • Implement a strategic annual plan for volunteer life cycle (recruitment, engagement, and retention)

  • Build strong, ongoing relationships, ensuring volunteers feel supported, informed, and valued

  • Design and deliver virtual and in-person training, including onboarding and xMinds Ambassador training

  • Coordinate volunteers for all organizational activities (webinars, resource tables, meetups, special events)

  • Create and manage appreciation and recognition processes to sustain long-term engagement

2. Community Outreach & Relationship Building

  • Represent xMinds at community events, school programs, resource fairs, and meetings throughout the county

  • Cultivate relationships with key stakeholders: families, educators, and service providers

  • Coordinate presentations about xMinds’ mission and programs at partner events

  • Proactively identify new partnership opportunities to expand xMinds’ reach and impact

3. Communications & Content Development

  • Write and edit clear, engaging content for outreach campaigns, emails, web updates, and volunteer materials

  • Assist in the development of newsletter and website content

  • Ensure all community-facing messaging is inclusive, culturally competent, and accessible to diverse families

4. Stewardship & Fundraising Support

  • Assist with essential donor stewardship activities (e.g., personalized thank-yous and follow-up)

  • Support small-to-mid-size fundraising campaigns (e.g., Giving Tuesday, dine-out, peer-to-peer, and social media fundraisers)

  • Maintain accurate records in xMinds’ volunteer, donor, and membership database (Wild Apricot)

5. Event & Program Support

  • Provide planning, logistics, and volunteer coordination for all xMinds programs (webinars, discussion groups, and special events)

  • Ensure language access and effective outreach to multilingual communities for all activities

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience in volunteer coordination or community engagement

  • Strong writing and editing skills

  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills

  • Empathy and cultural sensitivity when working with families of autistic students

  • Local residency in Montgomery County, MD (or adjacent areas)

  • Availability for evening/weekend events as needed

  • Proficiency with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms)

  • Ability to work independently within a remote environment

Preferred (Highly Valued)

  • Bilingual or multilingual skills, especially Spanish, Amharic, or Mandarin (or other Chinese languages), to liaise with non-English-speaking families

  • Experience in nonprofits, education, disability services, or family support

  • Experience with Canva, Wild Apricot, or other CRM systems

  • Background in training groups or leading workshops

  • Understanding of autism and special education
